Lord Berners was an eccentric novelist, painter and aesthete, but it is as a composer that he is best remembered. Berners saw Prosper Mérimée’s play Le Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement in 1917and ‘was at once fascinated by the grace, the spirit and the character of this little work’. Abandoning operatic tradition, this light and transparently orchestrated version of the narrative unfolds concisely and continuously. The amusing tale is one of domestic bickering and a minor miracle brought about by an act of charity, ‘held together in the style of a symphonic poem’.

“… Gracefully conducted by Nicholas Cleobury and efficiently played by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Le Carrose is heartily recommended to lovers of the untrodden byways of English – or French – opera.”
Christopher Webber – Opera – September 2022
“… The opera is dramatically portrayed, the feeling certainly helped by the excellence of the performers. As far as I can possibly judge, they could not be improved. Berners helps by never overdoing the orchestration, so that the words can be clear. Every singer also has excellent diction – they even seem to be enjoying themselves…”
Gary Higginson – MusicWeb-International.com – 18 May 2022
“… Berner’s attractive, effective and sparkling opera is heard here in an interpretation that is satisfying in all respects…” ****
